Junior Curling Program
The St. Marys Curling Clubs
conducts a junior Curling Program from mid November to the end of February
each season. The program finishes with a family Bonspiel where the kids and
their parents (or grandparents, or siblings, or aunt and uncle) curl together
for an afternoon of fun. The program is for children in grade 3 through grade
8. Grade 9 and 10 students are welcome also. The kids are split into 2
groups, with the younger in one and the older in the other. They are then
split up into those who are novices and those who have some experience. All
are taught the basic skills of delivering a rock and sweeping. Once mastered,
they are introduced to actually playing the game. Here they learn about the
playing surface (the ice), the rules of the game, teamwork and basic idea of
placing rocks in the house and scoring points. It is all about enjoying a team sport
(that they can play for a lifetime), socializing, having fun and developing
the skills, finesse and strategy that are the heart of curling. The kids can
curl with their friends and siblings and ultimately with their parents. We
encourage parents who are not curlers to join us on the ice to help out
and learn the game as well. For information about registering for the new
season this fall, please contact the Curling Club at 519-284-3090. We always
suggest the kids bring a friend(s) to curl with them so they can enjoy the
game together.
